Christ Church Memphis presents No Whispers Spring Conference:
Dealing with Shame & Forgiveness

Join us for a conversation on shame and redemption with Rev. Dr. Phil Jamieson, President of the United Methodist Foundation for the Memphis and Tennessee Annual Conferences. Also joining us is Rev. Lenn Harris Milam, an Ordained Elder in the Memphis Conference who is a Marriage & Family Therapist in private practice.

Discussion will focus on Dr. Jamieson’s book, The Face of Forgiveness: A Pastoral Theology of Shame and Redemption, and how we navigate our thoughts, feelings and actions in relationship to forgiven and redeemed people of God. Registration is FREE and includes lunch, but please register at christchurchmemphis.org/nowhispers.

“Phil does a great job of distinguishing between guilt and shame. So many believers carry a heavy burden of something someone said or how they heard it that it leads to a lifelong struggle of having positive self-esteem,” said Dr. Cynthia Davis, Executive Director of Congregational Care & Senior Associate Pastor at Christ Church.

“As Phil explains the theology of Jesus taking all our guilt and shame on the Cross and Lenn walks us through steps of healing and wholeness, it will help us experience increased clarity in our personal journey to extricate ourselves of some lifelong struggles.”

Started just over a year ago at Christ Church by Senior Pastor Dr. Shane Stanford, No Whispers is leading the way for mental health in the faith community. As Shane sat in the audience at last year’s Dennis H. Jones Living Well Network’s Mental Health Breakfast and listened to keynote speaker Kay Warren share about the shame often associated with mental illness and how many suffer alone in silence, he realized that the role of the church must increase. He also knew that no one should have to whisper in church about struggling with any form of mental illness. That moment gave birth to Christ Church’s No Whispers initiative.

As Christ Church continues to bring attention to these issues, the church will also participate in Mental Health Month in May.
