“And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.’” (Matthew 28:18-20) You may have grown up like I did learning the “Great Commission” of “Go therefore” (v.19). Those were our marching orders; the things that we needed to do to be faithful. I still believe that is our calling and yet at the same time I have become increasingly aware of what we might call the “Great Omission” of verse 20: “I am with you always…” The older I get the more dependent I am on that second affirmation. It is ever and always Christ’s faithful presence which empowers us to go out into the world. We go therefore and amazingly enough, we meet Jesus, the very one who sent us. Always remember that the same Lord who sends us out is also the one who bids us come to him with all our burdens and weariness. Rest in his grace, even while you go into the world.
